Why You Shouldn't Feed Wild Raccoons (Unless You Want to Regret Everything)
Posted on May 11th, 2025
We get it. You're outside enjoying a peaceful evening, a fuzzy little bandit waddles into view, gives you those "I haven't eaten in minutes" eyes, and your heart melts faster than ice cream in July. So you toss them a snack. What harm could it do? Oh, friend. Buckle up. When you feed a raccoon, you're not just feeding a raccoon. You're sponsoring an entire underground network of nocturnal mischief-makers. These fluff-tailed freeloaders are basically nature’s gossip columnists. The moment you toss out that crust of bread, they’ll scamper back to the forest like, “Y’ALL. Bobby has snacks.” Next thing you know, your backyard is the site of the 2am Raccoon Rager of the Year™. And these guys don't RSVP quietly. They bring their cousins, their cousin’s girlfriends, and a few sketchy acquaintances from the trash can behind the gas station. Let’s break down what happens when you play raccoon caterer: They’ll Wreck Your Garden. That lush patch of tomatoes you’ve been nurturing? Yeah, raccoons see that as a salad bar with no dress code. Expect trampled kale, half-eaten squash, and smug muddy paw prints. They’ll Treat Your Chimney Like an Airbnb. Got a cozy chimney or attic? Congratulations, you just became a landlord—without consent, rent, or boundaries. They Can Carry Diseases. Rabies, roundworms, and even parasites hitchhike on raccoons like it’s Spring Break in Daytona. Not cute. They Don’t Travel Alone. Feed one, get five. It’s the worst kind of BOGO. Bottom line: Wildlife isn’t meant to be tamed with cookies. Feeding raccoons trains them to associate humans with food, which puts everyone—them included—at risk. Keep things wild, mysterious, and healthy by appreciating raccoons from afar. With binoculars. And maybe a locked trash can. Because the only thing worse than a raccoon invasion… is a raccoon party you can’t uninvite. |

We’re ready to kick off summer again with our neighborhood’s Front Yard Parties! The Summer Front Yard Parties are a tradition in our neighborhood and an excellent way to meet neighbors that live nearby. The beauty of the party is how simple it is. The host supplies some simple refreshments and their front yard, the guests bring snacks, drinks to share, a lawn chair or two, and the party begins! If hosting feels intimidating or overwhelming, consider partnering with one or two of your neighbors to share the responsibility. The more the merrier!
Parties will start at 6:30pm and end at 8:30pm or...

2025 LCA Membership Rates
Thank you so much for your patience as we work through a few hiccups with the website! We’re in the process of transitioning responsibilities across the team, and with that comes a bit of a learning curve.
As you’ve probably noticed, the cost of just about everything has been going up lately. To keep bringing you the fun experiences and events you love, we’ve had to make a small adjustment to the Leawood Civic Association membership fee. Starting this year, membership will now be $30.00. We truly appreciate your understanding and support—it’s what keeps our community thriving!
